What is AI visibility?

CitedIndex editorial·7 min read·Updated July 2026

AI visibility is whether, and how often, a brand or product gets mentioned, linked, or cited when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Google's AI Overviews a question relevant to it. It's the AI-answer equivalent of "how do I rank on Google" — except there's no ranked list of ten links to check, just one synthesized answer that may name you, a competitor, several competitors, or no one at all. This guide covers what the term actually means, how it's different from classic SEO, how it gets measured, and what the tools built to track it actually check.

Abstract · the bottom line

AI visibility ≠ a Google rank. It splits into two distinct, separately-trackable events: amention (your brand named in the generated text) and a citation(a linked, attributed source). Tools built for this — Otterly AI,Peec AI, RankScale — run a repeated panel of prompts against named engines and report which of the two happened, how often, and against which competitors. Coverage varies more than the marketing pages suggest: of the 48 tools in our own index, 96% track ChatGPT but only 38% track Microsoft Copilot (seeour 2026 engine-coverage census).

What "AI Visibility" Actually Means

Every AI-visibility vendor phrases it slightly differently, but the underlying question is the same: when a buyer asks an AI assistant something relevant to your category, does your brand show up in the answer? That single question splits into two separate, independently-trackable events that are easy to conflate:

  • A mention — your brand is named somewhere in the generated text, with or without a link.
  • A citation — a specific claim in the answer is attributed to a source URL you control, usually shown as a clickable "Sources" reference.

The two don't always travel together. An engine can name your brand in passing with zero accompanying link, or cite your page as a source for a claim that never mentions your brand by name at all. A tool — or a manual check — that only reports one of the two is telling you half the story.

The reason this has become its own discipline rather than a footnote inside SEO: AI answers are increasingly where the question gets asked and answered without a click ever reaching your site. Similarweb clickstream data analyzed by SparkToro found 68.01% of U.S. Google searches in January–April 2026 ended without a click at all. Pew Research's study of real browsing behavior found the mechanism directly — people click a traditional blue-link result just 8% of the time when an AI Overview appears, versus 15% when it doesn't. If the answer already named a brand, that brand won the moment a click no longer measures.

How It's Different From Classic SEO

AI visibility overlaps with SEO — the same well-structured, well-sourced page tends to help both — but the unit you're optimizing for, and the platforms you're being judged on, are genuinely different.

Classic SEOAI visibility
Unit of successA numbered position among ten blue linksWhether you're mentioned or cited at all inside one synthesized answer
What you checkRank for a keyword, on one search engineShare of voice across a repeated panel of prompts, tracked per AI engine
Where it happensA Google or Bing results pageChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews — five products with different retrieval behavior
Primary leverBacklinks and on-page keyword optimizationSelf-contained, source-citable content, plus genuine presence on the platforms an engine already trusts (community threads, reference sites)

The "where it happens" row matters more than it looks. Gemini, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot each pick sources differently — Gemini's citations lean roughly 2.5× more on Wikipedia than AI Overviews', for one documented example — so a page structured to win one engine's citation doesn't automatically win another's. For the engine-specific mechanics, see the dedicated guides: ChatGPT,Perplexity,Gemini,AI Overviews,Claude andCopilot.

How AI Visibility Is Measured

A single query proves almost nothing — AI answers are non-deterministic, so the same prompt run twice can retrieve different sources. Real measurement means a repeated panel of prompts, run on a cadence, tracked per engine, broken into a few distinct signals:

  • Mention rate — the share of runs in which your brand is named at all.
  • Citation rate — the share of runs in which a claim is attributed to a source you control.
  • Share of voice — your mention/citation rate measured against a named set of competitors, not in isolation.
  • Sentiment — whether the mention is favorable, neutral or unfavorable when it does happen.

This is deliberately a summary. Building this correctly — how many times to run each prompt, why per-engine panels matter, and a free method that needs no paid tool at all — is its own guide: How to Measure Your AI Visibility.

What "AI-Visibility Tools" Actually Check — And Where They Differ

"AI visibility tool," "AI visibility checker" and "AI visibility tracker" get used interchangeably by vendors, but the products underneath vary on two axes that are worth checking before you pick one: which engines they cover, and whether they report a literal rank or just presence.

Engine coverage varies more than the marketing pages suggest. We went through all 48 GEO/AI-visibility tools in our index and tallied which of six engines each one actually claims to track: ChatGPT is covered by 46 of 48 (96%) — effectively table stakes — while Microsoft Copilot is covered by just 18 (38%), the single most common gap even among tools that otherwise track everything else. Full breakdown, tool by tool:the 2026 engine-coverage census.

Rank vs. presence is the other split. Some tools report a literal numeric position per prompt — RankScale,Nightwatch and LLMrefsall confirm this — while others report presence and sentiment without a position at all. Neither approach is wrong; they answer different questions, and the FAQ item onwhether there's a single "AI visibility score"goes into why the two camps disagree.

Price spreads widely with what's included: Otterly AIstarts self-serve at $29/month for a first read across four engines, whileAthenaHQ's credit-metered Starter plan runs $295/month for nine-engine coverage (it also runs a standing free "Essential" tier with a smaller credit allowance). The Four Kinds of AI-Visibility Tools

Not every tool in this space does the same job. Our index groups them into four categories, each answering a different question:

  • AI visibility monitoring — tracks whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews and Copilot mention, link or cite your brand at all. The core "am I showing up" layer.
  • AI rank tracking — plots literal position and share-of-voice inside AI answers over time, including geo-grid local specialists.
  • GEO & content optimization — shapes content, structure and entity signals so answer engines are more likely to cite you in the first place.
  • Citation services — agencies that run monitoring and optimization together as a managed program, rather than software you operate yourself.

Many tools straddle more than one category — a monitoring tool that also recommends content fixes, for instance — so the categories describe a tool's primary job, not an exclusive box.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is "AI visibility" the same thing as GEO or AEO?

Related, but not identical. AI visibility is the outcome — whether you're mentioned or cited. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) are names for the practice of trying to improve that outcome. Vendors use the three terms fairly interchangeably today; none has become the settled industry standard yet.

What is an "AI visibility score"?

Usually a single blended number some tools compute by combining mention rate, citation rate and sentiment across engines and prompts into one figure. It's a convenient headline number, but tools weight the inputs differently, so a score from one vendor isn't directly comparable to another's — see the deeper answer in ourshare-of-voice guide's FAQ.

What is an AI visibility checker?

A tool or workflow that runs a set of prompts against one or more AI engines and reports whether, and how, your brand shows up. It can be a paid product with an automated repeat schedule, or a manual process — our share-of-voice guide includes afree method that needs no tool at all.

What is an AI visibility audit?

A one-time (or periodic) check of your current mention and citation presence across the engines and prompts relevant to your business — often the first step before committing to an ongoing tracking tool, so you know whether there's a real gap worth paying to monitor.

How much do AI-visibility tools cost?

It spans a wide range. Self-serve options start around $29/month (Otterly AI), while credit-metered enterprise platforms like AthenaHQ start at $295/month for broader engine coverage (a smaller free tier also exists). See the fullprice-and-coverage comparison for the rest of the range.

Which AI engine should I check first?

ChatGPT is the safe default — 96% of the tools in our index track it, more than any other engine — but the right starting point depends on where your actual buyers search. If you don't know, a tool covering all five major engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, AI Overviews) from the start avoids re-auditing later.
