How to get cited by Google Gemini
Gemini is Google's standalone conversational AI app at gemini.google.com — a different product from the AI Overviews that sit above Google's regular search results, even though both draw on Google's underlying AI stack. That distinction matters for citations: this guide uses Google's own documentation for how Gemini's source-grounding actually works, plus Ahrefs' live, monthly-refreshed citation-domain trackers for Gemini and for AI Overviews, compared directly rather than treated as interchangeable.
Abstract · the bottom line
Gemini shows a "Sources" button inline and below its responses when it has one — but Google's own support documentation is explicit that not every response includes it. Ahrefs' Brand Radar tracker (3M+ US queries, June 2026 snapshot) finds Gemini's citations are heavily concentrated on three platforms — Reddit (29.2%), YouTube (13.9%) and Wikipedia (12.1%), 55.2% combined — a notably different mix from Google AI Overviews' own top-cited domains (tracked the same way, same month), where YouTube, Reddit and Facebook lead and Wikipedia's share is under half of Gemini's. Track which of your pages Gemini actually surfaces with a tool that confirms Gemini as a named engine, likeRankScale,Nightwatch orLLMrefs.
What Gemini Actually Is (And Isn't)
Three separate Google surfaces get lumped together under "Google AI" in most SEO advice, and they behave differently enough that treating them as one target is the single biggest mistake in this space. Gemini is Google's standalone conversational AI app, used directly at gemini.google.com and inside other Google products — not embedded in a Search results page. AI Overviews is the AI-generated summary shown inline above the ten blue links on a regular Google Search results page. AI Mode is a separate, fuller conversational search tab inside Google Search itself. All three can draw on Gemini's underlying models, but they are three different products with three different retrieval behaviors — this guide is specifically about the first one.
The practical reason this matters: as the data section below shows, Gemini and AI Overviews cite meaningfully different sets of domains even measured by the same tracker in the same month. A page structured to win an AI Overview citation is not automatically structured to win a Gemini one.
How Gemini Picks Sources — And Whether It Shows Them At All
Google's own Gemini Apps support documentation states plainly:"When sources are available, you can find the Sources button at the bottom of the response or in-line throughout the response." The same page is equally direct about the opposite case: "Not all responses include related links or sources. If you don't have the Sources button below a response, Gemini Apps didn't provide any links for that particular response." A citation is not a guaranteed feature of every answer — it's conditional on whether Gemini decided a response needed outside sourcing at all.
Google's developer documentation for the underlying mechanism — "grounding with Google Search," the same feature exposed to Gemini API developers — describes that decision as a live judgment call, not a constant: "The model analyzes the prompt and determines if a Google Search can improve the answer." Only if it decides yes does it"automatically [generate] one or multiple search queries and [execute] them,"then "processes the search results, synthesizes the information, and formulates a response." Citations are attached at the passage level, not as a bibliography tacked onto the end: each returned url_citation annotation links a specific text span — identified by a start and end index — to the source URL that supplied it.
Google's developer blog announcing the feature frames the purpose in three parts that double as the argument for wanting to be cited in the first place: grounding exists so responses are "more factual," so the model can "access real-time information" beyond its training cutoff, and — the line that matters most for a publisher — grounding brings "enhanced trustworthiness and traffic to publishers: by providing supporting links, grounding brings transparency to AI applications." Google is stating outright that a citation is meant to route a click back to the source, not merely credit it.
What the Citation Data Actually Shows
Ahrefs' Brand Radar runs a live, automatically-updated tracker of exactly which domains Gemini cites, refreshed monthly. Its methodology, stated on the page: domains are tracked "across over 3 million US queries spanning all topics," then ranked by mention share — each domain's slice of the citations the top 50 most-cited sources collectively earn. The snapshot below is the June 2026 data, published July 21, 2026.
| Rank | Domain | Gemini mention share |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | reddit.com | 29.2% |
| 2 | youtube.com | 13.9% |
| 3 | en.wikipedia.org | 12.1% |
| 4 | forbes.com | 3.0% |
| 5 | walmart.com | 2.7% |
| 6 | ebay.com | 2.0% |
| 7 | edmunds.com | 1.9% |
| 8 | caranddriver.com | 1.9% |
| 9 | kbb.com | 1.8% |
| 10 | target.com | 1.4% |
Ahrefs publishes the identical tracker, same methodology, same month, for Google AI Overviews. Read side by side, the two rankings diverge more than most advice assumes:
| Rank | Domain | AI Overviews mention share |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | youtube.com | 21.1% |
| 2 | reddit.com | 18.5% |
| 3 | facebook.com | 10.7% |
| 4 | google.com | 7.1% |
| 5 | instagram.com | 5.8% |
| 6 | quora.com | 5.0% |
| 7 | en.wikipedia.org | 4.8% |
| 8 | amazon.com | 3.5% |
| 9 | tiktok.com | 3.2% |
Three things stand out comparing them directly. Reddit and YouTube lead both— together 43.1% of Gemini's top-50 citations and 39.6% of AI Overviews' — so a genuine, disclosed presence on both is close to a universal requirement, not an engine-specific tactic. Wikipedia counts roughly 2.5× more in Gemini (12.1% vs. 4.8%) than in AI Overviews. And social apps and Google's own domain only show up in AI Overviews' top ranks — Facebook, Instagram and TikTok all sit in its top 9, and google.com itself is the #4 most-cited domain there — while none of the three appear in Gemini's top 15 at all. The two systems are pulling from recognizably different corners of the web even though Google built both.
One more figure worth holding onto, from a separate Ahrefs Brand Radar study (15,000 long-tail queries, August 2025): across ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot combined, only 12% of AI-cited URLs also ranked in Google's own top 10 for the same query — Perplexity was the outlier at closer to 29%. That number is a combined-engine average, not a Gemini-only figure (Ahrefs' report doesn't break the three out separately) — but it's directionally consistent with the domain data above: a page's Google ranking and its odds of an AI citation are related but genuinely separate games.
Three Claims About Gemini Citations That Don't Hold Up
Myth: winning an AI Overview citation means you've won Gemini too
The domain data above contradicts this directly. Gemini and AI Overviews are different products with different citation graphs — Wikipedia counts for roughly 2.5× more in Gemini, while Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and google.com itself only appear in AI Overviews' top ranks. Optimizing purely for one target's citation behavior doesn't reliably transfer to the other.
Myth: every Gemini answer that mentions your brand links back to you
Google's own support documentation says otherwise: a response either shows a Sources button, inline or at the bottom, or it doesn't provide any links for that response at all. A brand can be mentioned by name inside Gemini's generated text with zero accompanying citation — there's no guarantee a mention and a link travel together.
Myth: the path to a Gemini citation is identical to classic on-page SEO
Ahrefs' domain data says the opposite is closer to true for a majority of what Gemini actually cites: 55.2% of its top-50 citations concentrate on three community and reference platforms — Reddit, YouTube and Wikipedia — none of which are won by on-page keyword optimization on your own domain. A real, accurate presence on those three platforms currently outweighs classic ranking signals for most of Gemini's citation volume; on-page structure matters for the rest, but it isn't the majority lever here.
The Structure That Actually Gets Cited
Two different jobs, both real: earn presence on the platforms Gemini already trusts, and structure your own pages so a fanned-out sub-search can lift a specific passage from them.
❌ WRONG: treating Gemini citations purely as an on-page SEO problem — polishing your own product page's copy and structured data while having zero genuine presence on Reddit, YouTube or Wikipedia, the three platforms carrying 55% of Gemini's citation volume.
✅ RIGHT: a genuine, disclosed presence where your category is actually discussed (a real answer in a relevant subreddit thread, an accurate Wikipedia mention where your product meets notability, a real explainer video) — paired with your own pages structured so each sub-question has a self-contained, directly-answered passage a grounding search can lift.
- Show up honestly where your buyers already discuss the category — Reddit and YouTube alone account for 43% of Gemini's citations; astroturfing is a permanent-ban risk, disclosed genuine participation is not.
- Keep a factual, accurate Wikipedia presence where real notability exists — it counts for roughly 2.5× more in Gemini's citation mix than in AI Overviews'.
- Lead every section of your own pages with a direct, standalone answer — grounding is triggered per sub-question, not per page, so a narrative build-up before the answer is easy to skip over.
- Use real plain-HTML tables for pricing and comparisons; grounding synthesizes across sources and tabular facts are easier to extract accurately than prose.
- Keep pages normally crawlable and indexed — grounding runs through Google Search itself, so there's no separate "AI index" to game and no declared Gemini-specific crawler to allowlist.
- Monitor whether you're actually being cited, and by which sub-query, with RankScale, Nightwatch or LLMrefs — all three confirm Gemini as a tracked engine with a literal rank, not presence-only.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Gemini the same thing as Google AI Overviews?
No. Gemini is Google's standalone conversational AI app at gemini.google.com. AI Overviews is the AI-generated summary shown inline on a regular Google Search results page. Both can draw on Google's underlying AI models, but Ahrefs' domain-citation data, tracked the same way for both in the same month, shows they cite meaningfully different sets of sources.
Does every Gemini response show its sources?
No. Google's own Gemini Apps support documentation states that not all responses include related links or sources — if the Sources button doesn't appear below a response, Gemini didn't provide any links for that particular answer, even if it mentioned your brand by name in the text.
Which domains does Gemini cite most, and why does it matter?
Per Ahrefs' Brand Radar tracker (3M+ US queries, June 2026), Reddit (29.2%), YouTube (13.9%) and Wikipedia (12.1%) together account for 55.2% of Gemini's top-50 citations. Genuine, disclosed presence on those three platforms currently reaches more of Gemini's actual citation volume than on-page SEO on your own domain alone.
Do I need special schema markup to be cited by Gemini?
Google hasn't published a Gemini-specific schema requirement. Its general Search Central guidance for AI Overviews — grounding through the same Google Search index Gemini's own grounding tool queries — states no special schema.org markup is required to appear in those AI features. Treat that as directionally true for Gemini too rather than a confirmed Gemini-specific rule.
Does Gemini search the web for every question?
No. Google's grounding documentation describes this as a live decision: "the model analyzes the prompt and determines if a Google Search can improve the answer" before issuing any query. Straightforward or already-known questions may get answered from the model's own training without a live search or a citation at all.
Which AI-visibility tools track Gemini specifically and show a rank?
RankScale, Nightwatch and LLMrefs all confirm Gemini as a named tracked engine and display a literal numeric rank or position, not just a mention count. See the full rank-tracker comparison for how each verifies it.
