Google's generated answer block above the organic results, which cites a handful of pages instead of ranking ten. A page can be cited without ranking, and can rank without being cited.
AI Overviews replaced the Search Generative Experience label in 2024 and became the default treatment for informational queries during 2025. The block is assembled from a small citation set, typically three to eight pages, and the selection is not a re-ranking of the organic ten.
That gap is the practical point for anyone measuring visibility. Ahrefs measured in March 2026 that 38% of AI Overview citations came from pages ranking in the organic top ten, down from 76% a year earlier, and reaffirmed the figure in an August 2026 follow-up. A tool that reports only rank cannot tell you whether you are in the block.
What it is not: a featured snippet. A snippet lifts one passage from one ranked page and links it. An Overview synthesises several sources and attributes them in a citation list, so being the snippet holder does not carry over.
