Canonry and Trakkr both track how a brand shows up inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and other AI answer engines, but they start from opposite ends of the build-vs-buy spectrum. Canonry is free and source-available software (FSL-1.1-ALv2, converting to Apache 2.0 two years after each release) that you self-host with your own AI-provider API keys and a Node.js >=22.14 runtime; Trakkr is a hosted SaaS you sign up for with just a brand domain, live in about 60 seconds, and pay for on a Growth ($100/month) or Scale ($500/month) self-serve tier after a 14-day free trial.

Engine coverage differs too. Canonry tracks Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and local OpenAI-compatible LLMs for citation checks, plus off-site surfaces like Wikipedia, Reddit, LinkedIn and Google Business Profile, and detects AI-crawler traffic by ingesting server logs from Cloud Run, Vercel and a bundled WordPress plugin. Trakkr tracks eight named models — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Meta AI, DeepSeek and Google AI Overviews — and separately logs AI-crawler hits (GPTBot, PerplexityBot) hitting the brand's own site.

The two diverge sharply on what happens after a citation gap turns up. Canonry's technical-aeo audit scores a site across 16 AEO factors and can execute some fixes directly — JSON-LD schema, WordPress content edits, and indexing submissions — closing the loop from diagnosis to fix inside one open tool. Trakkr instead synthesizes findings into weekly, prioritized action playbooks, with a built-in AI agent that can auto-apply some of those actions, plus a no-code GA4 integration that attributes revenue to AI-referred traffic — a specific revenue-attribution claim Canonry doesn't make (Canonry layers in GA4, GSC and Bing Webmaster data to correlate citations with real traffic, not revenue). Both ship an MCP server for pulling data into an AI agent session: Canonry bundles a 67-tool MCP adapter and a built-in agent ('Aero') into its free self-hosted core; Trakkr includes MCP access from its $100/month Growth tier up — not gated to the pricier Scale tier — and bundles REST API access into Scale at no extra cost.

Pricing is the sharpest divide. Canonry's core platform costs nothing beyond your own AI-provider API bills and hosting; the company only charges for its agency layer — Embedded (white-labeled reporting), Managed (done-for-you execution) and Ads (private beta) — all custom-quoted with no self-serve price published. Trakkr publishes its full self-serve ladder: Growth at $100/month for one brand and 50 prompts, Scale at $500/month for ten brands, and a custom Enterprise tier. Company-wise, Canonry is a single-maintainer open-source project (92 GitHub stars, founder Arber Xhindoli) that also sells agency services; Trakkr is a 2025-founded venture-track SaaS built by Mack Grenfell, a repeat founder whose prior product, Byword, was an AI SEO content-writing platform.
