What the report can tell you

Use Bing AI Performance to identify which pages are being referenced and choose content worth checking—not to assign your site a universal AI visibility score. Bing defines total citations as sources displayed in AI-generated answers during the selected period, without indicating their placement or presentation within an answer. Source: Bing’s metric definition.

Grounding queries are phrases used to retrieve referenced content, and the displayed data represents a sample of overall citation activity. Source: grounding queries. Our interpretation: use those phrases as clues for reviewing a page’s accuracy and clarity, not as a complete record of what people asked.

Source-check date: September 6, 2026. Bing’s February 10, 2026 announcement introduces AI Performance as a public preview. Read the announcement. This is a documentation-based explainer and walkthrough; account-level steps were not exercised by CitedIndex, and the current interface was not personally inspected. Public documentation is sufficient for this explanation. To inspect a real property, use authorized access to that property; a paid research account is not a prerequisite for understanding these definitions.

The measurement contract

The announcement names Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and select partner integrations as the covered experiences. Source: announced scope. Treat that as the announcement’s scope, not evidence of coverage of every Microsoft product or the entire AI-search market.

Reported quantityDocumented meaningHow to use it
Total citationsDisplayed source citations within the selected period, as defined above.Track citation volume within the recorded period and scope; do not substitute answer count, audience size or visits.
Average cited pagesBing defines average cited pages as the average daily number of unique pages from your site displayed as sources over the selected range.Assess daily breadth, not the number of distinct URLs across the entire period.
Page-level citation activityBing’s page-level activity reports citation counts for specific URLs during the selected date range, not page importance, ranking or placement.Choose a referenced page to inspect.
Grounding queriesSampled retrieval phrases, as defined above.Compare the phrase with the page’s actual scope and wording; do not relabel it as a verbatim user prompt.

Source for the dashboard definitions.

Bing says the data is aggregated across supported AI surfaces and that average cited pages does not indicate ranking, authority or a page’s role within an individual answer. Source: aggregation and limitations.

Keep the quantities separate

Interpretation rule: do not equate a brand mention, a source citation, a referral visit, an API response and an observation in a consumer interface. Record each under its own label. A mention is a different observation from a displayed source reference; a reference is not evidence that someone visited your site. Likewise, do not present a separately collected API result as an observation of the consumer interface.

Interpretation: the documented citation metrics do not establish referral traffic, complete user prompts, per-answer placement, universal market share or a causal effect of an edit. The supplied definitions describe citation activity and sampled retrieval phrases, not those outcomes. Keep those questions open unless you have separate, appropriately scoped evidence.

Worked example: citations rise while daily breadth falls

Hypothetical example—not a real property, dashboard export or measured result. Assume two complete seven-day periods with the same supported-surface scope and metric definitions, and exact rather than rounded averages.

QuantityPeriod A: seven daysPeriod B: seven days
Total citations140210
Average cited pages per day106
Sum of daily unique cited-page counts: average × 77042
Citations ÷ sum of daily unique cited-page counts25

Mathematically, total citations increased by 50%, while average daily cited-page breadth decreased by 40%. The sum of daily unique cited-page counts fell from 70 to 42. That sum counts the same URL again when it appears on another day; it is not a period-wide unique-URL total.

The derived ratio rose from 2 to 5 citations per cited page-day. This is our calculation, not a documented Bing dashboard metric. It describes more citation activity relative to daily cited-page breadth. It is not citations per answer, nor proof that the same six pages dominated every day.

Interpretation: “More citations, fewer unique pages cited per day on average” is justified here. “Our authority improved,” “we moved higher in answers,” “more people asked about us” and “traffic increased” are not established by these figures. Even which period had more distinct cited URLs overall remains unresolved: pages could repeat or rotate across days. The totals also cannot attribute the change to a content edit.

Turn the example into a page check

Continue the hypothetical: the cited URL list includes /help/returns, and the sampled grounding phrases include return deadline opened items. The current page describes a deadline but leaves the treatment of opened items ambiguous.

The useful decision is to check that ambiguity against the publisher’s actual policy and correct it if necessary. The phrase provides a review lead; it does not prove that a user typed those exact words, that an answer misrepresented the policy, or that the page has a ranking defect. If the page is accurate and clear, do not rewrite it merely because the site-wide metrics moved.

A repeatable review record

  1. Record the property, observation date, selected start and end dates, and number of days. Note whether either period is incomplete. Treat the first observation as a baseline, not a newly announced product change.
  2. Write down the supported-surface scope stated by the documentation and any scope explicitly shown in your authorized view. If the view does not identify an individual surface, do not assign the aggregate to Copilot alone.
  3. Record total citations, average cited pages and the cited URLs with their available page-level counts. Preserve the original values before calculating comparisons. Prefer equal-length, complete periods for a simple volume comparison.
  4. Copy the sampled grounding phrases you are reviewing and label them “sampled retrieval phrases.” Preserve the period and context shown; do not invent a phrase-to-URL relationship if the report does not supply one.
  5. Choose one page worth checking for an outdated date, ambiguous condition, unsupported statement or missing explanation. Compare the published content with the underlying authoritative information. Record “review candidate,” not “proven ranking problem.”
  6. If a correction is warranted, record the URL, the actual defect, the correction and its publication date. Review subsequent citation activity as a later observation, not proof that the correction caused a lift.

If you correct the page, what does IndexNow add?

IndexNow notifies participating search engines when content is added, updated or removed. Source: Bing’s IndexNow explanation. Use it as a change notification, not as a citation request.

The IndexNow FAQ says submitting a URL alerts search engines to a change but does not guarantee indexing. Source: IndexNow indexing limitations. Bing’s announcement describes faster discovery as helping AI systems reference current content; the FAQ qualifies the downstream outcome by leaving indexing to the engine. Do not convert that freshness language into a guarantee of indexing or citation.

The FAQ also says each participating engine makes its own decision about whether to index a submitted URL. Source: differences between engines. Keep the correction, change notification, indexing observation and any later citation observation as separate entries in your record.

Maintenance and sources

Editorial maintenance policy: review this canonical explainer every 30 days, with an immediate review when either source changes relevant definitions or scope. Update this page rather than minting daily change pages. This source check is a documentation baseline, not an account inspection or evidence of a newly released change.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if a phrase I expected is absent?
Leave that question unresolved rather than treating absence as proof that the topic was never retrieved or cited. Bing describes the displayed grounding data as a sample. Preserve the selected period and inspect the available cited URLs before choosing a content review.
Should I rewrite pages just because average cited pages fell?
No—not on that number alone. First check the comparison periods and scope, then inspect specific pages for a real accuracy, clarity or completeness issue. In the hypothetical example, lower average daily breadth coexists with higher citation volume; neither establishes a ranking defect.
Can I use an API answer to fill in the missing answer placement?
Do not use a separate API result to backfill placement in the dashboard’s citations. Record it as a separate API observation, not as evidence of what appeared in a consumer interface or where a source appeared in the aggregated report.
