A sourced guide to Claude app and API web search, citation fields, honest content maintenance and manual citation checks without guaranteed ranking rules.

Claude can cite live web sources when web search is available and used. This guide separates the Claude app from the Messages API, explains the documented citation fields, and offers a manual way to inspect your own appearances. The historical traffic table below is context, not a measurement of citation opportunities or a forecast.

### Abstract · the bottom line

[Anthropic documents conditional, prompt-steerable API web search](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/web-search-tool), not a search on every request. [The Claude app has a Web search control](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10684626-enable-and-use-web-search); API developers declare a tool separately. Citations identify supporting sources, but enabling search does not guarantee that any particular page will be retrieved or cited. Keep facts clear and dated, then inspect actual answers rather than treating a formatting rule as a ranking formula.

## What "Claude" Means Here (App and API)

**Claude** is available through the app and through developer integrations. Both can use web information, but the app interface and the [Messages API web search tool](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/web-search-tool) are different observation surfaces. API response fields do not specify the app's exact rendering, retrieval configuration or source selection. Document citations for uploaded material are a separate capability and are not evidence of open-web discovery.

[Anthropic lists supported platforms, models and tool versions](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/web-search-tool#dynamic-filtering), with different support for basic search and dynamic filtering. Its built-in tool is not available on Amazon Bedrock. That does not mean every Bedrock-based product is unable to search: an application can supply its own retrieval tools. Identify the actual integration before treating its answers as a sample of the Claude app.

## How Search and Citations Actually Work

[Anthropic describes the API loop](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/web-search-tool#how-web-search-works): after a developer adds the tool, Claude decides when to search based on the prompt, the API returns search results, and the process may repeat before a final response with cited sources.

The API documentation describes the following search tendencies. These are useful examples, not a publisher eligibility rule: prompts and tool configuration can change whether a search happens.

| Claude searches for… | Claude answers directly for… |
| --- | --- |
| Recent events, news, or announcements | Established facts, math, science fundamentals, or coding concepts |
| Current prices, rates, scores, or statistics | Creative writing or brainstorming |
| Information about organizations, people, or products that might have changed | Analysis of content already provided in the conversation |
| Explicit requests to search or look something up | Conversational turns and greetings |

A system prompt can encourage or discourage search, and `max_uses` limits tool use. Do not rule out evergreen pages: a user can explicitly ask Claude to search for an established fact. The topic of a page alone does not tell you whether an answer will retrieve it.

[The API response documentation](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/web-search-tool#response) says citations are always enabled for web search and describes `web_search_result_location` objects with a source URL, title, encrypted index and `cited_text` of up to 150 characters. That field is an excerpt of source content, not a maximum length for your page, paragraph, table cell or Claude's answer. Anthropic requires original-source citations when displaying API outputs directly to users. None of these requirements guarantees that your page will be selected.

## Why Claude Is Worth Planning For Now: Even Without a Citation Tracker

A tracker’s engine list does not establish what every other tracker can measure. Ask any provider claiming Claude coverage which product surface, prompts, dates and collection method it samples, and whether it records source URLs or only brand mentions. This guide withdraws its blanket claim that no large automated tracker covers Claude; an omission from one vendor’s list cannot prove that market-wide absence.

The following historical table preserves the June 2025 and May 2026 figures reported by [PPC Land on 11 June 2026, attributing them to Similarweb](https://ppc.land/chatgpt-drops-to-52-7-as-claude-triples-its-ai-traffic-share/). The reported population is worldwide all-device traffic to generative-AI platform websites, with the later snapshot dated 26 May 2026. This is secondary reporting, not a CitedIndex measurement or a newly retrieved Similarweb dataset.

| Platform | June 2025 traffic share | May 2026 traffic share |
| --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT | 76.4% | 52.7% |
| Gemini | 8.9% | 27.3% |
| Claude | 1.6% | 8.9% |

In that dated table, Claude’s website-traffic share rose from 1.6% to 8.9%, more than fivefold. This is share within the reported website population, not absolute users, total model usage, citations, API traffic or business outcomes. The reporting describes its intermediate periods inconsistently, so we do not repeat the previous single-month growth claim. These historical values do not establish that Claude is growing faster today.

## Three Claims About Claude Citations That Don't Hold Up

### Myth: Claude searches the web automatically, the same way ChatGPT or Gemini do

[The app support page](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10684626-enable-and-use-web-search) now describes enabling Web search through the + menu and a checkmark. Team and Enterprise Owners must enable the workspace capability first. Once enabled, Claude can invoke search when useful; a manual enabling step does not mean the user must request every individual search. [The Messages API](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/web-search-tool#how-to-use-web-search) separately requires a declared tool and permits organization-level restrictions. Competitors' defaults are not established by these sources.

### Myth: web search is a paid-plan-only feature

[Anthropic documents web search and web fetch for free accounts](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10684626-enable-and-use-web-search#manage-usage-on-free-claude-accounts), subject to usage limits. Do not assume citation opportunities are restricted to paid users.

### Myth: you can benchmark Claude citations the same way you benchmark Gemini or ChatGPT ones today

Benchmark the surface you actually want to understand. An API-based sample and an app-based sample must not be silently pooled. Require the exact prompts, collection dates, model or mode where visible, successful-response count, source URLs and missing-run treatment. No single vendor’s coverage list proves that Claude citation data does not exist.

## Writing Clear, Checkable Content

The following is editorial advice for clarity and verification, not a tested Claude ranking intervention. Put the answer near the relevant question, keep qualifications beside the fact, and make sources and effective dates easy for readers to check.

Avoid burying a price or changed policy so deeply that a reader cannot tell which value is current. Do not remove necessary conditions merely to make a passage shorter.

Prefer a dated sentence or labelled table with the product, plan, currency, billing basis and relevant exclusions. There is no demonstrated 150-character authoring target: the API citation excerpt limit is not a content-optimization rule.

- Review changing facts when the underlying information changes. Keep useful evergreen explanations; they are not excluded from web search.
- Keep facts and their qualifications together. Do not force them under the API excerpt length.
- Use accessible HTML tables where rows and columns help readers compare prices or specifications; this is presentation advice, not proof of a citation lift.
- Show effective dates for time-sensitive claims and modification dates only for real edits. Dates help verification but do not guarantee retrieval.
- Use the linked directory pages to investigate monitoring options. Confirm the current engine, collection surface and metric with the vendor; the historical mentions here are not newly re-verified.

## Implementation Checklist

**Manual observation workflow (proposed, not newly executed):** Choose relevant prompts before checking answers. Record the exact prompt, date and time, product surface, visible mode, locale, web-search setting and conversation context. Save the answer and cited URLs, open each citation to check that it supports the adjacent claim, and mark search-not-used, errors and missing responses separately from successful uncited answers. Keep API observations separate from Claude app observations. Compare like-for-like samples over time; a before/after change is not proof that an edit caused it. See [the measurement guide](/guides/measuring-ai-share-of-voice/).

Tick items off as you implement, this page remembers your progress on this device.

#### Content Freshness

- Pricing, specs and any figure that changes over time is visibly dated on the page
- Recent changes (launches, price moves, org changes) get their own clearly-dated section, not folded silently into old copy

#### Content Structure

- Every high-intent fact (price, date, statistic) is stated in one short, self-contained sentence or table cell
- Pricing and comparisons are in real plain-HTML tables, not prose or images

#### Don't Chase the Wrong Signals

- Recorded whether Web search was enabled and which Claude surface was observed
- Required a disclosed prompt sample, dates and collection method for domain-share figures

#### Measurement

- Using a tool that confirms it tracks Claude specifically as a named engine
- Checked whether that tool shows a literal rank/position or presence-only (see the [rank-tracker comparison](/best-ai-rank-trackers))

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Does Claude search the web for every question?

No. [The API documentation](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/web-search-tool) describes prompt-steerable search for current or changing information and explicit search requests. Stable-knowledge prompts may be answered directly. This is not a fixed exclusion of evergreen pages or a specification of every app session.

### Are Claude's citations always shown when it searches?

[Anthropic says API web-search citations are always enabled](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/agents-and-tools/tool-use/web-search-tool#response) and must accompany directly displayed outputs. The citation includes a source URL, title and a source excerpt of up to 150 characters. That is not a publisher word-count rule or a guarantee that your page appears. The [app documentation](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10684626-enable-and-use-web-search) separately describes source links in search responses.

### Is there a tool that shows which domains Claude cites most, like Ahrefs Brand Radar does for other engines?

Require a disclosed sample and collection method from any tracker. Absence from one vendor’s engine list is not evidence that no Claude citation tracker exists; this guide no longer asserts that market-wide absence.

### Do I have to turn web search on manually in Claude?

[Anthropic documents the + menu and Web search checkmark](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10684626-enable-and-use-web-search) in the app, with workspace enablement first on Team and Enterprise. Once available, search can be invoked as needed. The API separately requires a declared tool and permits organization restrictions.

### Is Claude web search available to free-plan users?

Yes. [Anthropic documents free-account search and fetch usage limits](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/10684626-enable-and-use-web-search); a long fetched document can consume substantial capacity.

### Which AI-visibility tools track Claude specifically and show a rank?

This guide previously named RankScale, Nightwatch and LLMrefs. Treat the linked directory pages as starting points, not a new verification of present coverage or rank semantics. Ask vendors whether they collect the Claude app or an API, and whether “rank” is brand order, citation order or a different metric. See [the comparison](/best-ai-rank-trackers).

**About CitedIndex:** This is sourced education about Claude, not an original citation study. Provider documentation establishes the capabilities described here; the maintenance suggestions are not claimed as tested ranking interventions. See our [methodology](/methodology/).

Editorial correction: 5 September 2026. Corrected app/API scope, search controls, citation-excerpt interpretation and unsupported tracker-absence claims; added inspectable documentation and a manual observation workflow. The historical June 2025/May 2026 traffic table is retained as secondary reporting, not newly measured. No Claude answers, vendor capabilities or citation improvements were newly tested. Original publication and verification dates are retained.
